JACQUES PONS Selected Works
1936-
French School:
Jacques Pons was born in Avignon, France in 1936, but he spent his childhood in Ardeche. He is known for his landscapes and seacapes done in vibrant colors. Pons can be best described as a follower of the ever-popular Fauves, a loosely knot school of painters led my Henri Matisse who emerged in Paris 1905. The Fauves, or the "Wild Beasts," were so dubbed by the art Critic Louis Vauxcelles who poked fun at their shocking and unruly style of painting of the 1905 Salon d' Automne. The parision public was not very accepting of the Fauves' bold color choices and abstract compositions at first but in time this movement became overwhelmingly popular and widely venerated for its contribution to modern art.
Pons belongs to a group of artists identified as "second generation Fauves." He, along with a handful of artists, he carried Fauvism well into 20th century, keeping with the aesthetic intentions of the revolutionary movement. His style emphasizes color and light and de-emphasizes logical perspective. he uses flat, pure color planes often outlined in black, a modern version of Gauguin and Bernard's cloisonne-inspired painting technique.
In 1953 he entered the Ecole Allard in Marseille. During his four years of study there he learned the basics of drawing and the science of color. He won several awards at this time, including the Pebeo-lefranc award. In 1958, he returned to Ardeche where he
painted and showed in local galleries. In 1966, he traveled to Corsica. This was a definitive time for Pons; on this journey he discovered a landscape bathed in light that would influence his palette dramatically, bringing in the rich and vibrant tones he is best
known for. Leaving this beautiful setting, he moved to Saint-Tropez at the invitation of his childhood friend at painting Jean-Paul Cleren, who encouraged Pons to set up a frame workshop there, a profession that afforded him introduction to more famous painters such as Bernaard Buffet, Antoni Clave, Leonor Fini, Pierre Yves Tremoi, and also the famous writers: Francoise Sagan, Andre Roussin and Dominque Lapierre, who encouraged Pons to pursue his painting career. At this time, his wife opened a gallery which exhibited both local and internationally known artists, as well as Pons. In 1985 the artists characterized by the light and heat of southern France, a perfect environment to be inspired and to practice his colorful style.
